“Charles is a kind person who wants to ensure your success but I would not say he was a great tutor. Yes he is very experienced however, I booked him for biostatistics tutoring, and he spent the majority of the time rambling about study techniques: reading the textbook well in advanced, referring to different websites, and downloading his numerous PDFs. I told him in the tutoring session and in my booking message that I have a biostats exam on Monday and I wanted to work through textbook practice problems with him. He spent the first nearly 20 minutes of the 1-hour session talking about excel sheets, pdfs, and websites; he would have kept talking about study resources if I had not directed the attention to completing book problems. Throughout the entire session Charles kept getting distracted with his study resources to the point that he diverted the focus away from the tutoring session to talk about other things (his work experiences, my ability to use excel, job interviews, etc) numerous times. Whenever I asked a question about why or how something should be solved, he either gave a generic answer or did not answer. For instance, he would say "this is an easy question" or "read the textbook" or he would completely disregard my question and keep talking about everything else. I would tell Charles that my professor has never used a certain phrase, or I have never heard of something and he would say that I didn't read the textbook. Charles did not tutor, he barely taught anything, he did not draw on the whiteboard or talk through the problems; he just watched in silence - when he was not talking - and told me to check my answers in the answer key. When I went over the 1 hour period because of the ~20 minutes (an unnecessarily long amount of time) he spent talking about documents, he got upset. He responded by saying how he works at a top university teaching Grad students, how he has at least 15 years of experience, and how he was helping me by spending nearly 20 minutes talking about PDF's. He also went into why I hired a tutor if I am not going to adhere to the tutor. I still appreciated the time he took to work with me but the tutoring session was not very successful, I did not take much away from the session and we did not go through that many problems.”

“Chuck was a nice guy but not the best listener. I sought help for a very concrete problem I was facing while trying to use SAS (i.e., an error message which was preventing me from opening a large, password protected data file in SAS), but rather than engage with the problem/let me explain what I had already tried, he kept referencing his experience, background, and qualifications while simultaneously talking up the benefits of using an AI tool. I kept having to redirect him to the problem I was trying to solve and finally had to flat out ask him if he knew what a particular code snippet did. He then revealed that he hasn't used SAS in about 10 years and again, encouraged me to use an AI tool to find the answer. Like I said, nice guy, but I didn't hire a tutor to have someone tell me I should utilize the online resources...”

“Calling my session 'tutoring' is laughable. I gained nothing from my experience and sought a refund. Chuck doesn't seem like a bad person, but he is certainly a bad tutor; he just wants a captive audience. The vast majority – more than 45-minutes worth - of my session was Chuck talking at me without pausing. I attempted to interrupt him multiple times, and he would either rudely talk over me or resume speaking without acknowledging my words. His lecture topics included his son's career, his own professional career and accolades, professors I've never heard of, movies I've never heard of, and his thoughts on politics in America. His ranting about his son was interrupted by his wife at one point because even she could tell that it had nothing to do with my tutoring session! Chuck also painstakingly combed through his email during these rants – narrating each click and mistake as he went – attempting to find “resources” for me that I never asked for (he seemingly laughed at me for not being able to afford one of his resources). During the few times I was able to interject into Chuck's word-vomiting and ask a question successfully, he either did not answer my question or implied I should already know the answer. At one point, he told me to utilize Wikipedia as a resource for an explanation because “it is better at explaining than [him].” It seemed that my questions were an inconvenience to Chuck and that my interruptions were irritating. The only time he engaged with me directly was when he inquired about my college major, which did not pertain to my preparation for the LSAT. Of the ~10 minutes Chuck attempted to explain LSAT logic games utilizing the content he forwarded me, he did not provide any of the necessary context for it to be relevant and failed to address my repeated pleas for him to refocus on my needs. I received the impression that he only teaches through his ‘tried-and-true’ methods and that he is unable/unwilling to accommodate his tutee's unique learning style/requests. I sincerely hope that Wyzant can identify that his “lesson review” is bogus and does not reflect any actual edification on the matters I desired. I am utterly perplexed by how Chuck has so many positive reviews, given my horrendous experience. If I could provide him feedback directly, I would highly encourage him to retire and cease tutoring. He is doing those he tutors a disservice and taking advantage of them by bulldozing their voice.”

Charles was did not use the 1 hour session I booked with him wisely, as he spent the first 30-40 minutes getting off track discussing his experience and accolades, which was completely irrelevant to my homework content. Charles trailed off almost the entire session I booked with him and cut me off when I tried coming back to the homework. We barely went over the homework and I felt like I left with little to no understanding of what I wanted to cover. Charles was impatient, rude and ridiculed me almost the entire session. His attitude was very demeaning and I left feeling very badly about myself and my skills in this subject. I wouldn't recommend booking with Charles, unless you already have a pretty good understanding on the subject because he will scold you.”

“I was trying to get a tutor for my class and I thought that Charles would be a great fit. However, he did not listen to what I was asking of him until around 43/45 minutes. We didn't even start working on the material until at least 20 minutes into the session. I repeatedly told him that this is for an in-person class and I would not be able to use his resources on my exam. He kept referring back to his excel sheet and to his files. He told me that I needed to be open-minded. I am open-minded in most areas. However, this is a class I needed help with and while he knew the material, he was unable to help me because he kept referring back to that excel sheet after I told him that I couldn't use it as it wasn't a way that would help me learn the material and apply it.”
